Had dinner with Duncan last night at one of our favorite places, the Daily Cafe, just shooting the breeze about cameras, photography and all that.

Duncan just got Sony’s new RX1 full-frame rangefinder camera, and it’s one of the most beautiful cameras I’ve seen in a while: compact, full-featured, with a beautifully crafted metal body and an amazing Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 lens. I wrested it from him just long enough to grab a few shots, including this one.

The images I’ve seen are just dreamy; I don’t think I could even really contemplate purchasing this camera, given its rather high price tag, but I can definitely see its appeal. It truly looks like a winner.

That’s nice, Rick. Great portrait. Very calming feel to it. Sounds like a pleasant evening all the way around.

I don’t want to be picky, but calling the RX-1 a rangefinder camera is just wrong. It is not a rangefinder camera. It does not even have a viewfinder. Just a LCD screen.

(nor would I call the Fuji X-Pro1 or X100 a rangefinder camera – despite them having an optical viewfinder)

And this is not making a statement on its quality or usefulness.

How about ‘rangefinder-style’ camera? That’s really what it seems to me — something in the style of the classic fixed-lens rangefinders like my old Agfa/Voightlander cameras.

It looks like a great little rangefinder-style camera to me. Love that shot. I’ve got to link up with you guys again soon.

We’ve been loving the RX1 — it’s a pretty sweet little camera with an awesome lens.

I’m hoping to swing by your talk next week on the ANWR; maybe I’ll see you there.

Well… I guess we know how *that* turned out. (RX1)…
